the argentine tango
Originating in Buenos Aires in the late 19th century. It is a beautiful, social dance.
The music is quite melodic, and much more varied than ballroom dancing. Traditionally one would dance to music composed pre 1980s. However a younger generation of tango also includes electro-tango, world music and tango-nuevo.
It is a coupled dance - meaning you have a partner. The embrace can be as far or as close as one is comfortable with, it is very relaxed, and the follower should not feel pushed/pulled about.
The dance is lead by one person, who decides the motion of the dance; it is up to the follower to feel the leaders movement. So that the couple can move fluidly over the dancefloor.
Importantly, the Argentine Tango is freestyle. There aren't any choreographed moves. The idea is to teach you how to dance. Once mastered you will be able to go to any milonga (Tango dance party) and have a nice dance with anyone in the room.
